Buduruwagala

Buduruwagala is an ancient Buddhist temple carved into the rock of the tenth century,

where we will find 7 statues of Buddha and his aspirants carved in bas-relief in the rock.

It is located about 5 km from Wellawaya on the Thanamalwila road.

The name Buduruwagala means “the rock with the Buddha statue”.

Seven figures are carved into this rock with a huge standing Buddha statue 16 meters taller than the island.

It still bears traces in its guise of its original stucco and a long orange stripe that suggests the bright colors of the past.

This Buddha statue is located in the center of two groupings of three figures on each side,

with the right hand raised and the fingers in the posture of kindness and freedom from fear. the gesture of Abhaya Mudra.

Although there is no information documented on this site in ancient scriptures, several historians dated these statues from the sixth century to the end of the Anuradhapura period. (between the 8th and 10th centuries).

In the group of the three sculptures on the right, the central figure of the Buddha still retains much of its white finish.

This is the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara who, in Buddhist mythology by giving relief to the defenseless and was named God Natha during the Kotte Period.

In the lower part of the figure it bears a robe and ornaments while at the center of the crown there is a figure of the Buddha in meditation.

The female figure on her left, in low relief is Aryathara (Tara Devi), who popular beliefs attributed to her the power to prevent earthquakes, floods, epidemics and other calamities.

To the right of Avalokitesvara we find Prince Sudhana who represents the ability to guide the young man on the right path of good conduct.

In the group of three sculptures to the left of the Buddha The central figure is the Maithri Bodhisathva, that is, the fifth Buddha.

The figure has a crown, ornaments and a bathrobe.

On his left is the figure of Vajrapani (God Sakra) who holds the hourglass symbol of Tibetan lightning, the Dorje, in quartz.

The right bas-relief of the Bodhisathva perhaps represents Sahampath Brahma, of which only the upper part of the body was made.

The entire carved rock resembles a kneeling elephant with a bowed head.

Buduruwagala is a place not yet well known by conventional tourist routes.

I assure you that once you arrive in the area amidst water lily ponds full of birds and beautiful butterflies, you will feel as if enchanted by a sense of peace.
