Hantana
What/Where is it?
Hanthana is a mountain range in central Sri Lanka, southwest of the city of Kandy.
This mountain range was declared a protected environmental area in February 2010 under the national environmental law.
In the Sinhalese language, Hanthana means seven peaks.
The highest peak is 1,158 meters.
This peak is called Uura Kanda in Sinhala.
Kanda means mountain or peak and Uura means pig.
This mountain range is little explored by trekking enthusiasts.
The size of the mountain range and the proximity to the city of Kandy allow different types of excursions, depending on the degree of difficulty that every traveler is looking for.
Children and people who are not used to walking can make easy paths through the tea fields.
It is a very comfortable excursion that we can adapt to any person or teenager.
We can even observe the nursery schools for the children of the tea pickers.
People with a high degree of trekking can climb the highest peak and even cross the mountain range from east to west.
It is crossed from the area of Mahakanda, near the Peradeniya Gardens, towards Uuduwella.
In this area of Sri Lanka, hikers will discover a paradise very similar to that of Indiana Jones in the Cursed Temple, since part of the footage was shot right on the mountain of Hanthana.
Where is it?
As we have already said, Hanthana is located about 5 kilometers south of the center of Kandy.
What does this excursion consist of?
You can take a one, two or three hour walk where we will have the opportunity to get to know the tea fields in this part of the country with the particularity that, very close, we will also contemplate rice fields.
In these simple excursions we will cross several cities that can only be reached by walking or by tuk-tuk.
So it’s quite an adventure worth doing.
It’s nice to go through the streets of these small cities and see how people’s lives take place: workers, small shops, schools …
If you are interested in getting to know this small part of Sri Lanka explored, let us know in the comments in our section “Design your tailor-made trip”.
For our part, we will be happy to show you this little-known and explored place in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is indeed the perfect place for children and for people who like animals and nature.
This country is incredibly green.
It is impossible not to find elephant herds on safari or even on the same road traveling.
It is also very easy to see leopards, macaques and other types of monkeys, giant squirrels, jackals, etc. etc
Furthermore, walking with children and adults through the Peradeniya Botanical Garden is a delight. Along with the giant trees and millions of plants, we will also find monkeys and other animals in this immense place.
