The Lighthouse of Dondra

Built in 1887, on the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka (called Devundara and Devinuwara), during the colonial period, using granite rock and steel imported from the UK and Scotland then painted white.

Lighthouse

Shedding light on the Indian Ocean and the well-used nautical route off this coast, it is one of the four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka.

Octagonal in shape with picturesque yellow windows against white-painted bricks, the Dondra Lighthouse is fifty meters high on the edge of a shady and well-kept garden.

To reach the top you have to climb 196 steps.

The serenity of the lighthouse is very far from the regular bustle of the city, the coconut trees, the bougainvillea flowers and the gentle breeze blowing all around make it unique.

Where is it?

It is located 6 km southeast of the city of Matara.

We recommend…

It is probably better to ask for permission to climb to the top, and this could involve the payment of a sort of tax.

There is no ticket office or sign that indicates how much the entrance costs, but an officiating-looking guy will probably access you at the lighthouse door and a little discretion will help you.

Admission price: around 500 LKR-Sri Lankan Rupees
