Tips for traveling to Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is one of the most fascinating destinations in Asia and has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing wellness destinations for 2026. 1. Visa
Do English-speaking country citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Yes. Citizens from English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, must obtain travel authorization before entering Sri Lanka.
There are currently two options:
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) (recommended option)
Visa on arrival
Recommended option: ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization
The Tourist Card / Entry Card must be obtained before entering Sri Lanka.
How to apply?
Visit the official website: www.eta.gov.lk
Complete the form with your personal and travel details.
Submit your application.
You will receive approval by email, usually within 24 to 48 hours.

Good news!
From May 25, 2026, citizens of 40 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, can obtain a 30-day tourist ETA free of charge.
Alternative option: Visa on arrival
It is also possible to obtain a visa upon arrival in Sri Lanka. However, we recommend applying for the ETA in advance, as the entry process is usually faster and more convenient.
Important: Immigration regulations may change. We recommend always checking the latest information on the official website: www.eta.gov.lk before traveling.
Key information about tourist visas:
Validity: Both the ETA and the visa on arrival are valid for 30 days and can be extended up to a maximum of 180 days.
Required documentation: A passport with at least 6 months of validity, a return or onward ticket, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay.
Extensions: If you wish to extend your trip, you can apply for an extension by paying an additional fee.

2. Clothing
i) Clothing for everyday wear
Sri Lanka is a tropical country, so it is recommended to wear lightweight cotton clothing, preferably in light colors. Choose comfortable and breathable outfits, ideal for visiting temples, exploring markets, or relaxing on the beach. Don’t forget to bring an umbrella or parasol—it will be useful for both rain and protection from the sun.
ii) Clothing for the hill country
If you plan to visit regions such as Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, Bandarawela, or Ella, bring light warm clothing. Temperatures drop noticeably, especially at night. A light jacket, a long-sleeved sweater, long trousers, and a rain jacket will be your best companions.
iii) Clothing for temples and sacred places
It is essential to dress respectfully: shoulders and legs (below the knees) must be covered for both men and women. Avoid low-cut or tight-fitting clothing. Shoes must be removed before entering all temples, but you may wear socks, which are highly recommended for walking comfortably and protecting your feet from the hot ground.
3.Sun Protection
Sri Lanka enjoys sunny weather throughout much of the year. Use a high-SPF sunscreen and reapply it several times a day, especially if you are going to the beach or taking part in outdoor activities. Wearing a hat and sunglasses is also highly recommended.
4. First aid kit
Although pharmacies are available throughout the country, it is useful to bring a small travel first-aid kit that includes pain relievers, adhesive bandages, disinfectant, and any personal medication. This way, you will be prepared to deal with minor discomforts without any hassle.
5. Mosquitoes
In Sri Lanka, mosquitoes can be a considerable nuisance, especially in tropical and humid areas. It is essential to carry a good mosquito repellent and apply it as needed. Another way to avoid unpleasant bites is to wear light cotton clothing that covers most of the body.
Remember that repellent should always be applied after sunscreen, as the latter may contain substances that attract certain insects. Stay protected to enjoy your days outdoors without worry.
6. Water
Always drink bottled water to avoid stomach problems. Stay well hydrated, especially if you are exposed to the heat and humidity. Carry a bottle of water with you during excursions.
7. Vaccines
No mandatory vaccinations are required to travel to Sri Lanka. However, it is advisable to consult your doctor to ensure that you are up to date with the recommended vaccinations and to receive personalized medical advice.
8.Currency, Money and Credit or Debit Cards
The official currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR or Rs). You can easily exchange dollars or euros at the airport, banks, and exchange offices. We recommend making your first exchange at the airport upon arrival. If you need more, your driver can help you find a safe and suitable place. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and many shops.

Tipping is customary in Sri Lanka and is a way to show appreciation for good service. Here are some examples:
Restaurants: 10% if it is not already included as a service charge.
Porters: 200 LKR per bag (USD 0.60 / ≈ €0.50 per bag).
Safaris:
3,000 LKR per jeep (half day) (USD 9 / ≈ €8 )
5,000 LKR per jeep (full day) (USD 15 / ≈ €13 )
Drivers:
For groups of 2 people: USD 9 per person per day (€8 per person per day).
For groups of 4 people: USD 7 per person per day (€6 per person per day).
For groups of 5 people or more: USD 6 per person per day (€5 per person per day).

For safety reasons, road journeys usually finish around 6:00 PM, coinciding with sunset. This helps avoid risks on roads that are not always well-lit.

There is phone coverage throughout the country. It is convenient to buy a local SIM card to make calls within and outside the island from an unlocked mobile. This will allow you to always be connected during your stay. (eSIMs are also now available in Sri Lanka)

Most accommodations and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi access. This will allow you to stay in touch with your loved ones, upload your photos, or check maps and itineraries during your trip.
