wilpattu national park

Wilpattu (land of the lakes) national park is one of the oldest and most important protected areas in Sri Lanka.

It also contains numerous important cultural sites.

Bordering three cities (Mannar, Anuradhapura and Puttalam), the park has an area of approximately 130,000 hectares.

Also has huge Sri Lankan coasts not far from Kalpitiya.

The natural fresh water lakes known as “Villus” are what highlights of the park as they are reproduction points for animals.

Wilpattu is open from 6.00 to 18.00 and is accessible as a 4 x 4 jeep safari.

Wilpattu Bear

The best time to visit the park is from February to October.

You will be able to spot Sri Lankan wild animals such as elephants, jackals, sloth bears, leopards, wild buffaloes, spotted deer, mongoose and many other species.

In addition to mammals, a Wilpattu safari can offer you a wide range of opportunities to spot incredibly large swarms of brightly coloured butterflies including the blue butterfly.

Elephant Wilpattu

You will catch a variety of wild animals during your Wilpattu safari experience.

Thanks to the beautiful coastline, shallow lakes, dense Mediterranean scrub, treeless grasslands and dense forest.

The small bodies of water scattered in the park are a prominent feature that enhances the photographic character of the park, while attracting a variety of aquatic birds and reptiles.

For those who are in love with tropical wildlife, the Wilpattu safari is a must.
